The Questing Knights are returning. In 4996, the Emperor sent them to the far reaches of the Known Worlds, charged with recovering the Lost Worlds of humanity. They set forth in craft of diverse worth, investigating old legends, studying ancient lore, battling fiendish enemies--all to discover the routes to these missing planets. Many have died. Some have succeeded. Those who succeeded discovered a universe even more fractured than they feared. On some worlds, humanity had sunk to levels of barbarism from which it might never recover. On others, Earth's descendants maintained the ancient technology, but used it to wage war against their neighbors. The Knights encountered these and worse. Now the other denizens of the heavens have become aware of the Empire. They see the opportunity inherent in these new worlds, and their own fleets prepare to contest their rulership. Now you can join these adventurous souls in their voyages. It is a chance for anyone to carve out a new empire or die in the attempt.
Players begin the game possessing a ship along with crew, weapons, and a limited amount of money. The player's goal is to ensure his survival by increasing his armada's size, strength, and wealth. Along the way, the player uncovers some of the deeper secrets in the universe and finds himself called upon to deal with them. Successfully doing so helps ensure his place among humanity's heroes.
Throughout the game, there is a large focus on making and breaking agreements between the player and other characters. Any agreement that can be made can be broken. How often and with whom a player makes or breaks an agreement affects other characters' attitudes toward the player.
The player can follow a number of different routes to wealth and power. These include trading and helping to eliminate pirates, becoming a pirate himself, making trades that benefit the fleet, acquiring items by force, and hiring out the fleet's services for profit or trade.
